Biosafety Cabinet Maintenance Program
Proper maintenance and certification of biosafety cabinets (BSCs) are essential to ensure safe and effective operation within Tulane research laboratories. The Office of Biosafety manages the university’s inventory of BSCs, overseeing their certification status and coordinating maintenance, repairs, and decontamination services.
Our trained biosafety technicians certify Tulane’s BSCs annually and can troubleshoot basic issues. When specialized services are needed, the Office of Biosafety will coordinate work between an NSF-accredited contractor and the responsible laboratory or department.
Program Services
Annual Recertification
Certification of New BSCs
Coordination of Repairs and Troubleshooting
Decontamination and Relocation Coordination
Disposal Assistance
The annual recertification of all biosafety cabinets is provided at no cost to departments, courtesy of the Office of Biosafety. However, any repairs, maintenance, or certifications required as a result of relocation are the financial responsibility of the laboratory or department, particularly when services must be performed by an outside NSF-accredited vendor.
All new BSC purchases must be approved by the Office of Biosafety before submitting requisitions to Materials Management. This ensures that the selected model and location meet university and biosafety standards. Initial certifications must also be coordinated through our office even when included as part of a supplier package to maintain centralized certification records.
Requesting Service
For any BSC-related service including repairs, certification scheduling, or relocation, please submit an Operations Request Form to initiate the process. Our team will coordinate next steps and connect you with approved service providers as needed.
