Method for Increasing the Concentration of Cancer Fighting Stilbenes in Postharvest Sugarcane

Background

Tulane University is actively seeking commercial entities to further develop and commercialize a novel method of postharvest production and enhancement of resveratrol and piceatannol in sugarcane under certain conditions of stress, and a novel method of producing sugarcane fiber with an enhanced level of stilbenes

Applications

Resveratrol and piceatannol are naturally occurring phenolic compounds belonging to the stilbene family that have been shown to have cancer preventative, anti-inflammatory, and antileukemic properties. The method may be implemented to increase theconcentration of resveratrol and piceatannol in sugarcane juice and fiber for use in supplements andmedications. Easy to implement method for increasing the concentration of resveratrol and piceatannol in sugarcane. A method is applied postharvest, thereby reducing the risk of cross-contamination with non-enhanced produce.

Current Work

This technology has been tested extensively in the lab and optimized protocols have been developed.
