Hybrid Cell Penetrating Peptides for Efficient Delivery of Peptide and Peptide Nucleic Acid Cargoes

Background

Tulane University is actively seeking commercial entities to further develop and commercialize novel cell penetrating peptide sequences that deliver peptide nucleic acid (PNA) and bioactive peptide sequences to living cells. Additionally, the Peptide Research Laboratory at Tulane University has discovered novel, antimicrobial, peptide-sequence variants that retain activity in the presence of concentrated human red blood cells. Peptides are synthesized using D-amino acids to mitigate proteolytic activity and breakdown in other biological environments.

Applications

Improved Peptide Therapeutics Efficiently deliver both fluorescent dyes and bioactive peptides to multiple cell types. Could be used as a research tool for fast delivery that functions at low micromolar concentrations in a variety of cell types, and has low cytotoxicity. Efficiently delivers PNA and peptide cargo to the cell interior without inhibiting the functionality of the PNA/ peptide cargoes. Our new peptide variants can be used for clinical treatments of topical and systemic bacterial infections; cleaning, disinfecting, sterilizing; or food preservation purposes. Unlike current antimicrobials our peptides do not affect resistance in bacterial infections.
